Tracking curriculum coverage

Once you have a curriculum framework and have tagged your scenarios with its topics, SimChat can show you which topics your learners have covered. This helps you see where there are gaps in practice across a cohort or for an individual learner.

What coverage means

A topic is covered when a learner has completed a session on a scenario tagged with that topic. Abandoned or cancelled sessions do not count.

SimChat shows two related measures, and it is worth being clear about the difference:

• Authoring progress - how many topics have at least one scenario mapped to them. On a curriculum's page this appears near the top, as a count such as "12 of 40 topics have scenarios mapped". It tells you whether your content covers the curriculum on paper
• User coverage - how many topics learners have actually completed in practice. It tells you whether your learners have practised those topics

A curriculum can be fully mapped and still have almost no user coverage, which is usually the more useful thing to know.

Coverage for a cohort or individual learner

1. Open Curriculum → Coverage in the sidebar. Cohort leads and assessors find the same page under My cohorts → Curriculum coverage
2. Use the user or cohort filter at the top to choose who to report on. Until you pick one, the page prompts you to select a user or cohort
3. If you have more than one curriculum, use the All curricula dropdown to narrow the report

The table lists each domain with covered and total topic counts and a percentage. Select a domain row to expand it and see individual topics, each showing whether it is covered, the First covered date, and the Covering scenarios that contributed.

Organisation-wide coverage

To see coverage across all learners rather than one cohort:

1. Open Curriculum → Frameworks in the sidebar
2. Select a framework to open its detail page
3. Scroll to the User coverage section

The layout matches the cohort view: domains with covered and total counts, expandable to show individual topics.

If no learners have completed scenarios tagged to this curriculum yet, SimChat explains that coverage will populate as conversations are completed.

Linking a cohort to specific curricula

When you create or edit a cohort, you can link it to one or more curricula:

1. Go to Cohorts in the sidebar
2. Create a new cohort or edit an existing one
3. Under Curricula, tick the frameworks you want coverage reports to focus on
4. Save the cohort

If you leave all curricula unticked, coverage for that cohort uses all active curricula in your organisation.

Sub-cohorts inherit the curricula linked to their parent, so linking at the top of a programme covers everything nested beneath it. You can still link a different curriculum to an individual sub-cohort where a year group or specialty needs its own.

Exporting coverage reports

On the coverage page, select Full report + export to open the detailed report, then use the buttons at the top:

• Export Excel - a spreadsheet with one sheet per curriculum framework in scope
• Export PDF - a printable report

If more than one curriculum is in scope, filter with the Curriculum dropdown before exporting.

These exports are useful for assessment records, programme reviews and reporting to others.
