Microphone and audio troubleshooting

SimChat's voice activities need two things to work:

Microphone access so the AI roleplay patient or character can hear you.
Audio playback so you can hear the AI's voice.

Your browser should ask for microphone permission the first time you start a voice conversation. When prompted, select Allow. Audio playback usually works automatically, but some browsers and extensions can block it.

If something isn't working, find your problem below.

The AI can't hear me

This usually comes down to one of three things: microphone permissions, your microphone setup, or your network blocking the connection.

1. Check the microphone prompt

When you open a SimChat voice activity, your browser may show a microphone permission message near the address bar.

Select:

Allow or Allow while visiting the site

Then refresh the page and try again.

2. Check browser permissions

If you accidentally selected Block, you'll need to change the permission manually.

Google Chrome

Open SimChat in Chrome.
Select the icon next to the website address, usually a padlock or settings icon.
Find Microphone.
Change the setting to Allow.
Refresh the page.

Creating your first scenario

Scenarios are the heart of SimChat. Each scenario sets up a simulated conversation by defining the AI character's personality, the context and the goals for the learner.

As an organisation owner, administrator or author, you can create scenarios and publish them for your learners to use. You can write scenarios yourself, generate them with AI, or - if your organisation has set up template sets - start from a template that pre-fills the key fields for you.

Scenario components

Every scenario includes:

Title and description - what the scenario is about
AI behaviour - the set of AI rules for the scenario: how the avatar plays its role, how the conversation is marked, and the style of feedback
User instructions - what the learner sees before starting the scenario. Explains the context and objectives.
Script - the AI character's background, personality, and knowledge. This is what powers the AI's responses.
Checklist - assessment criteria for evaluating learner performance
Questions (optional) - follow-up questions asked after the conversation
Resources (optional) - additional resources for the learner

Creating your organisation

To get started with SimChat:

Visit https://simchat.ai and click Try for free
Enter your organisation name and your details
Choose your industry sector and preferred language
Set your password and agree to the terms
Check your email for a verification link

Once you verify your email, you'll be taken directly to your organisation's dashboard.

Your dashboard

After signing in, you'll land on your Dashboard. This is your central hub for:

Creating scenarios using the scenario creator

The scenario creator allows you to build scenarios step by step using an interactive editor. It guides you through choosing the AI behaviour, writing the script, adding a checklist and configuring how learners will interact with the AI character.

You can save your scenario as a draft at any time. When you are ready to make it available to your learners, select Publish.

Starting from a template set

If your organisation has template sets, you'll see a Start from a template option when you click Create scenario. A template set fills in the user instructions, scenario script and checklist in one click, so you can start from a ready-made base and adapt it.

Select Start from a template, search for a set by name and choose it. The scenario creator opens with those fields already filled in - you can still edit everything before saving.

|| Owners and administrators on the Enterprise plan can create template sets under Templates in the sidebar, by combining existing user instruction, script and checklist templates. Each template can be reused across several sets.

Creating and managing cohorts

Cohorts help you organise your people and control access to scenarios and collections.

A cohort brings together:

Users - the learners who belong to it (for example "2026 intake")
Staff - the authors and assessors who run it

Cohorts are useful for:

Organising learners by year, course, module or placement
Restricting scenarios and collections to selected cohorts
Letting a tutor or team run their own cohort - its learners, content and activity - without organisation-wide admin access

|| Setting up cohorts is optional. By default, all users who join your organisation can access all published scenarios.

Creating a cohort

Go to Cohorts in the sidebar
Select Create cohort
Name your cohort (e.g. "Cohort 2026") and add an optional description
Save the cohort

After creating a cohort, you can:

Add learners with Add users on the cohort's page
Create an invite link under Users → Invites that automatically adds learners to this cohort
Restrict specific scenarios and collections to this cohort

Adding users to a cohort

Open the cohort from Cohorts and select Add users to choose from your organisation's learners. The cohort page lists its users, and you can remove someone at any time - they stay in your organisation, they just leave the cohort.
