Understanding AI behaviours

Every scenario in SimChat is assigned an AI behaviour. AI behaviours define how the AI acts during the interaction and how the learner is assessed. They allow your organisation to create structured, predictable learning experiences tailored to specific communication tasks.

SimChat creates four default AI behaviours for each organisation when it is set up. Administrators can also create custom AI behaviours to meet their own training requirements.

What AI behaviours do

AI behaviours control:

  • Avatar - how the avatar plays its role during the conversation: tone, personality and boundaries
  • Marking - how the AI awards marks when reviewing the conversation against the scenario's checklist
  • Feedback - the focus, style and structure of the AI-generated feedback learners receive
  • Generation - how the AI scenario generator writes new scenarios that use the behaviour

Assigning the correct AI behaviour is important for a convincing AI character and meaningful feedback.

Default AI behaviours

When your organisation is created, SimChat provisions four AI behaviours based on your organisation's industry category (healthcare or other). On Scenarios → AI behaviours, defaults are listed under Generic and, for healthcare organisations, Medical headings.

All organisations receive:

  • Generic
  • Interview

Healthcare organisations also receive:

  • History taking
  • Counselling

Other industries receive:

  • Customer service
  • Explanation

These defaults include preconfigured avatar, marking, feedback and generation settings suitable for common communication contexts. Select Configure on any AI behaviour to review or adjust its Avatar, Marking, Feedback and Generation settings.

Custom AI behaviours

If the default AI behaviours don't match your training, administrators can create custom AI behaviours with their own avatar instructions, under Scenarios → AI behaviours. Custom AI behaviours appear under your organisation name on that page. See Creating custom AI behaviours.
